When will ATM fraud end?

Here is some analysis from a site in the Phillipines.

First, automated teller machine (ATM) users will just have to be keener about where their mother bank’s cash dispensers are if they want to avoid the higher charges to be imposed for using other banks’ ATMs.
The country’s major banks made this announcement last month citing higher ATM costs. They also said that the last increase in ATM fees for internetwork withdrawals had been in 2005, and were no longer enough to maintain security and service levels.

A Working Bitcoin ATM Is in San Diego, But Its Most Vocal Backer Is Gone

Bitcoin ATMs may soon be all the fad. One in San Diego is up and running.

Behold: The world's first bitcoin ATM was set up for a press day in a ballroom at some hotel in San Diego. Local San Diego news outlet ABC10 wouldn't allow video embedding from YouTube, but you can watch the report here. The story of how it came to be is about as strange as you'd expect from the cryptocurrency world.About a month ago, amidst Cyprus's bank crisis, Jeff Berwick, an anarcho-capitalist from Canada, did what any entrepreneurial opportunist does. He announced his plans to set up an ATM based around bitcoin. Terminal access to the decentralized currency, Berwick thought, would be irresistible to citizens trapped by a dwindling national banking system. Berwick's ATM, a "bi-lateral" machine, would allow customers to both deposit and withdraw cash in exchange for bitcoins.

Skimmer used in Montgomery County ATM thefts

Here's another example of skimmers used in an ATM theft.

Technology has a way of making things so impersonal.

Police say two men in Montgomery County didn't commit armed robbery or even mug a late night walker but instead used a basic looking piece of plastic to rob dozens from afar.

The device is called a skimmer. It comes in a variation of shapes and sizes and fits perfectly over the card slot of an ATM machine. The problem is that it's nearly impossible to detect.

Australian Criminals Go High Tech

ATMs in Australia are having to deal with all sorts of high tech thievery. Here's the story.

The winner was pretty pleased, and although it hasn't arrived yet, he's already emailed us with some ideas of what he's thinking of using it for. (Nothing controversial, honest!)
3D printers work by building up an object layer by layer, typically out of some kind of polymer, accumulating material in the desired pattern until you have a finished product.
The trendy term for this is additive manufacturing, unlike a milling machine, which cuts away the parts you don't want until what's left behind is the finished product.

A leading Congress Party MP and his brother have already set up a pilot scheme to bring affordable clean water to his constituents in Kanakapura, a rural suburb of India's high-tech capital Bangalore.

Warning issued on ATM scam theft

ATMs also provide for an inviting target for scams. Irish authorities recently issued this alert on an ATM scam.

The Irish Payments Services Organisation has issued a warning to ATM users against a new type of distraction scam, reports of which are becoming more and more prevalent across the country.
Targeting in particular, vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the scheme involves the criminals placing a device on the ATM which holds the user’s card, and observes them applying their pin.
When the ATM user becomes frustrated at their card being trapped, the scammer is on hand to help. Having placed the device in the machine, the thief know exactly how to retrieve the card safely. Returned to the customer however is a ‘dummy’ card.

The History of the ATM

Ever want to know the history behind the invention now known as the ATM. Check out this site.

In 1939, Luther Simjian patented an early and not-so-successful prototype of an ATM.
However, some experts have the opinion that James Goodfellow of Scotland holds the earliest patent date of 1966 for a modern ATM, and John D White (also of Docutel) in the US is often credited with inventing the first free-standing ATM design. In 1967, John Shepherd-Barron invented and installed an ATM in a Barclays Bank in London. Don Wetzel invented an American made ATM in 1968.

The World's First Bitcoin ATM May End Up in Cash-Strapped Cyprus

Bitcoin ATMs seem to be the new fad, and according to this article, one may wind up in Cyprus.

Charging ahead of the bitcoin start-up stampede, Jeff Berwick (Founder of Stockhouse.com and TDV Media), has announced the debut of Bitcoin ATM, with hope to launch its first machine in Cyprus. This couldn't be more timely, as Antreas Artemis, head of the island nation's largest bank, has suddenly resigned amidst a banking crisis in the small Mediterranean country.
To try to quell the crisis, which has led some to speculate that Cyprus might make a disastrous exit from the eurozone, the country will now enforce weekly withdrawal limits. Banks, meanwhile, are closed until Thursday, and Cyprus's finance minister has said that bank accounts with 100,000 euros or more may see up to 40 percent of those funds converted into bank shares.

Shoppers Cry When ATM breaks in Nigeria

Here's a humorous story involving an ATM mishap in Nigeria.

Adeola Akinremi writes that shoppers in Lagos are finding it difficult to access cash through the Automated Teller Machines (ATM), as most banks in the country are neglecting their responsibilities towards providing quality service through the ATMs.

There is a growing discontent among bank customers in Lagos and perhaps in other big cities across the country. Nowadays, frequent long queues are seen at the different locations of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and customers are worried and frustrated that they spend more time than necessary trying to withdraw cash from the ATMs for their shopping.

Need Bitcoins? This ATM takes dollars and funds your account

Two entrepreneurs from New Hampshire are working on a bitcoin ATM.

Zach Harvey has an ambitious plan to accelerate adoption of the Internet's favorite alternative currency: installing in thousands of bars, restaurants, and grocery stores ATMs that will let you buy Bitcoins anonymously.
It's the opposite of a traditional automated teller that dispenses currency. Instead, these Bitcoin ATMs will accept dollar bills -- using the same validation mechanism as vending machines -- and instantly convert the amount to Bitcoins and deposit the result in your account.

'80% of ATMs already complaining with new BSP rule'

In the Phillippines, citizens are having trouble adjusting to new ATM rule.

Around 80% of the total ATM system in the country is already compliant with the "end-to-end triple data encryption standard (3DES)", according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

"Most of the new machines being installed now are 3DES. Based on our estimates, of the total ATMs today, around 80% are already 3DES-compliant to begin with. So there's the smaller component that needs to make this migration by 2015," BSP deputy governor Nestor Espenilla told ANC.

The BSP had recently approved the Enhanced Information Technology Risk Management Framework last August 1. As part of the framework, banks are required to adopt the 3DES in their ATMs nationwide by January 2015, and to replace ATM cards with EMV-enabled ones by January 2017.

Cashless ATM's are on top of priority by merchants. Using a cashless ATM is beneficial for both shoppers and merchants.
Why Shoppers/Customers Prefer Using ATM Cards?
According to some recent surveys, modern consumer tends to use their ATM card instead of their credit cards. It helps them in reducing their excess expenditure, through ATM cards they can shop till a definite amount, whereas in case of credit cards consumers are more prone to overspending. One more benefit is that they have to pay very less amount as processing fee (if compared to high processing rates of Credit Card Payments) when they use their ATM's for making payments.
Benefits for Merchants
One thing is obvious that if modern consumers prefer using their ATM cards, then they will prefer going to places that provides payment facility with specialized processing machines for payments by ATM card. Although every credit card processing unit is capable of receiving payment by ATM cards, but for that customers have to pay extra processing charges. Even, merchants have to pay a fix amount (which is far more than payments by Cashless ATM's) for such kind of transactions. It reduces their overall profits on smaller transactions.
By installing a Cashless ATM merchants can attract more and more customers. It will also make transaction simpler and beneficial for their customers as well as for them.
